Southern Quote of the Day(SQTD):It’s a Cold Wind that Never Changes!

I remember like yesterday, mama would talkto friends on the phone or try to get a point across to daddy and she would often say; “It’s a cold wind that never changes!”  Like most southern- fried quotes, I pondered this much of my childhood to young adulthood.  I recently have come to appreciate the deep meaning of this quote.  In this miraculous universe that we are blessed with; it revolves and changes.  God made the seasons to change from winter to summer and in between.  Seasons are also comparable to life changes.  It’s natural progression and revolution/evolution ( whatever your flavor).  Hence, if something or someone never changes; it’s considered cold, unforgiving, brutal, stubborn and not progressive.

Be careful not to become a cold wind….Progress and evolve!  Be relevant in each season!

Southern Quote of The Day (SQTD):  Like a Dog Sitting on a Haystack in a Pasture!

Today I overheard a conservation between a elderly woman and a young man. She had a situation involving a family member that she was desperately trying to explain. In the midst of her giving description, she dramatically said, “just like a dog sitting on an haystack in a pasture!” This caught my attention and started my thought process.  As relevant to her conversation; I realized she was making an analogy about a stubborn and selfish person.  As we know; dogs don’t usually eat hay but horses do. So if a dog is sitting on a haystack…. the dog is out of place and probably just trying to block the horse from getting to its food source.

We all have encountered people with this nature.  They don’t really want a certain thing but don’t want anyone else to have it either. Furthermore, that certain thing could be detrimental to someone else or to a situation.  The analogy of it being a Dog would be synonymous with having a dogmatic personality( having a strong set in ways, doctrine, opinion…etc).  Additionally, having the characteristic of being territorial like a dog.

So if you ever hear quote, you will know what it means.  FYI…. This is a famous Chinese proverb…but it got southern-fried.

So Hopefully no one will be making this analogy about you!

Have a Gooden,

The Hazy days of summer, long rides down the Money Mississippi road, crop day, cotton row, shotgun houses, snow cones, and butter cookies from the Mr. Jacks corner store in Baptist town.  There are a lot of things I remember from growing up in the Mississippi Delta; but my love for the magnolia flower is ever with me.  The Mighty Magnolia….the Southern Magnolia that is…. a classy and majestic flowering tree. Strong is stature, evergreen, beautiful and demanding attention.  This plant will always be one of the best parts of Mississippi to me.

The Magnolia is the state flower of Mississippi and Louisiana.  The tree is well-loved for it fragrant blooms, heavy timber, and overall landscape beauty.  The Magnolia tree also has a significant role in the social history of the south.  In the 1800’s,  a Magnolia tree outside of home in the south often indicated a safe haven for runaway slaves.  A good account of this history can be heard by visiting the Slave Haven Underground Railroad Museum in Memphis Tennessee.  I already prized this plant, but to hear that it served a significant purpose in humanity just deepened the adoration.

Southern Quote of The Day( SQTQ): You can catch more Bees with Honey than with Vinegar

This is one of my favorite quotes and almost a fact in my life. “You can catch more bees with honey than with vinegar”, I always heard older people say this when I was younger.   However, I never had an idea what it meant and how beneficial it would be in my life.
Life is always more pleasant when people are nice, sweet-natured, and agreeable.   This is where Anthropology and Entomology connect; most living things like sweet substances and peaceful environments.  So in Layman’s terms, you can attract more people and effects when you are nice and agreeable. It can make life sooooo much easier. I know sometimes people can get under skin if you’re having a disagreement or you just think that the person is an idiot, lol.  However, if you are cordial and agreeable you can often sway people and situations in your favor.  Additionally, you wouldn’t have to break tears, a sweat or a nail.

Southern Quote of The Day: Don’t Fatten the Frog for the Snake

I remember having a conversation with my coworker several years back about what was going on with an aquaintance. In other words…Gossip! At the end of the conversation, she stated,  “Mama always said don’t fatten the frog for the snake!” She must have seen the puzzled look on my face so she explained what it meant. In layman’s terms, it means to never build up something for it to blindsidely taken from you.

This quote crossed my mind today because as women, we can can put so much time, care and concern into a man to build his ego and status. Sometimes all that effort is later afforded to another woman leaving youlike a baker without a taste.
